Bill Fay Life Is People
Bill Fay Life Is People 300
(Dead Oceans)
This English singer-songwriter and pianist demonstrates that even a four-decade gap between new material doesn’t matter when the outcome is this beautiful. After releasing two progressive-folk albums in the early 1970s, Fay returned to the studio later in the decade, but didn’t release any new material until last year. One might expect him to sound out-of-tune or dusty, but it’s exactly the opposite here. Right from the start, the piano-driven “There Is a Valley” carries itself through said valley’s air with a cinematic passion. Nature metaphors about in the more low-key but positively compelling “The Never Ending Happening,” with simply Fay at his piano (with a tender string outro) sharing his observations about life, death, war and faith. Fay’s friendship with Wilco clearly shows as well: lead singer Jeff Tweedy joins in for the brisk acoustic duet “This World,” while Fay gives their song “Jesus, Etc.” a subdued and moving piano cover.

Irma Thomas In Between Tears [Reissue]
Irma Thomas In Between Tears [Reissue]
(Alive)
Known as the “Soul Queen of New Orleans,” Thomas may not have gotten the same mainstream recognition as Aretha Franklin or Etta James, but her brand of blues, soul and R&B is just as good. The twinkling, piano-and-guitar-driven songs on this album – originally released in 1971 and now with bonus tracks – are all about female empowerment and not being taken advantage of in relationships. She tells a cheating husband about his new “love” and what he’s losing in the self-explanatory “She’ll Never Be Your Wife,” and the re-recorded “Wish Someone Would Care” ruminates about how “smiles hide a lot of things.” She explains all of her points excellently in the monologue “Coming From Behind,” stating that both sides need to show love in relationships and she won’t be a victim: “every time you men two-time, we women can three-time.”
