Linda Perhacs The Soul of All Natural Things
Linda Perhacs The Soul of All Natural Things 300
(Asthmatic Kitty)
After releasing her under-promoted and unfairly overlooked debut album Parallelograms in 1970, psychedelic folk singer Linda Perhacs decided to return to work as a dental technician. In the following decades, however, the album developed a cult following thanks to its intimate, wistful acoustic sound coupled with Perhacs’ hypnotic voice to make it one of the purest female psych-pop records ever. After that sought-after album was successfully reissued in 2005 and 2008, she finally returned to the studio for her newest album in forty-four years. That enormous gap hasn’t diminished the spirit found in The Soul of All Natural Things: rather, it worked to make it sound more mature and wise. The opening title track refers to the name being a description of peace, delivered with Perhacs’ soft-yet-strong, poetic vocals and intensely emotional, cinematic instrumentation. There’s just something particularly intoxicating about her lifting voice, exploring intellectual observations about the natural world. The fact that it almost disappeared into obscurity is inexcusable.

Ivy League TX Transparency
Ivy League TX Transparency 300
(6131)
Now with a ‘TX” to distinguish themselves, the Midland, Texas band Ivy League rips through eleven tracks of emotional, melodic hardcore on this record. They’ve been compared to Title Fight and Saves the Day with their intense assault of soaring, catchy songs about the human experience: relationships, remorse, guilt, dealing with demons and more. Singer Josh Huff really gets into his personal lyrics, shouting them in a way that could only be pulled off by someone who understands their reality. The kinetic energy of ever-changing tempos helps the songs feel even more alive, with the title track and “Daily Pt. 2” being some of my favorites. I also really liked the simmered-down instrumental “Egress,” sticking to a starry-sounding post-hardcore mood.
