Perfect Pussy Say Yes to Love
Perfect Pussy Say Yes to Love 300

(Captured Tracks)
Beneath this record’s glittery shield-emblazoned ivory packaging lies something that I wasn’t expecting: furiously screeching, crashing noise-punk in the vein of Melt-Banana. This Syracuse, New York band has only been around since 2012, but their furious music already sounds experienced. Through the lo-fi din of the guitars, feedback and rushing drums, Meredith Graves (formerly of Syracuse noise-rock trio Shoppers) shouts passionately about getting through pain, fear and loneliness independently, with the record’s title sounding less-than-positive when used in the context of “Interference Fits.” That song is one of my favorites for uniquely placing its bracing noise-punk layer atop what could pass for a laid-back Sonic Youth instrumental.

The Spits Kill The Kool
Spits Kill The Kool 300
(In The Red)
On their latest record (collecting single-sides, demos and outtakes,) these Kalamazoo “space-age mutant punk rockers” chug through 22 songs in 41 minutes, sounding true to the DIY ethic. The ultra-grainy production, simple melodies, buzzing guitar, subdued vocals and old-fashioned sci-fi synth all make for a true garage-sounding experience (sort of like a less-refined Ramones) and I love it. The lyrics, unsurprisingly, share in the message of everything from storming the streets to B-movie sci-fi and horror. Originally pressed in a limited, tour-only edition in 2011, this double-LP reissue also includes several extra tracks.
