Four Tet Beautiful Rewind
(Text)
This U.K. musician’s seventh record is another plunge into a blend of several electronic styles including jungle, house and ambient. He utilizes lots of beats and repeated vocal samples to make beautiful, hypnotic and occasionally harsh club songs, bridging the gap between modern and old-school sounds. Borrowing its name from a jungle-playing London pirate radio station that’s been around since 1991, “Kool FM” is a highlight with a dirty-sounding mix of pulsing beats, wailing celestial synth and samples prominent later in the track, including an MC’s “hey-hey-hey” and crashing beats. “Unicorn” is easily the “prettiest” track, with glimmering, sugar-coated rainbow streaks atop graceful percussion.
