Migrations In Rust Two Shadows
(NNA Tapes)
I was first introduced to this electronic experimental project through a track on Ratskin Records’ (Triskaidekaphobia) 13,000.00 Milliseconds compilation. Sound artist Jesse Allen’s debut full-length is a multi-layered tapestry of richly woven synth and strings, down-pitched vocals and – at certain points – steady beats for an experience that feels like drifting through nebulas. It makes for haunting beautiful, textural ambience that reminds me of Burning Star Core. It could make for an orchestrated space score that sounds as gorgeous as it is gripping, such as the subtle rumble behind the mellow “Canticle for Melting Gold” and the intensely-conveyed grandeur of “Drawing Down the Moon.”

Bill Patton A New Kind of Man
(Versicolor)
On his new full-length, this Seattle-based singer-songwriter (most notable for contributing guitar and pedal steel work for acts including Fleet Foxes, Jesse Sykes and more) performs intimate, smoky ballads with his crooning voice. With a sound that falls between folk and country with a strong Americana flavor, Patton conveys a poignant, world-weary attitude as he sings his heartfelt songs. He includes several covers in the mix, with the most unexpected being a thick, jazzy Tom Waits-style re-imagining of Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny from the Block.” The other covers are the The Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand” getting a dark, druggy, Pink Floyd-ish makeover, and John Lennon’s “Oh Yoko!” getting a fresh folksy interpretation.
