Carl Matthews Call For World Saviours (Reissue)

(Bureau B)

Active since the dawn of the 1980s, Carl Matthews is a Cumbria, UK-based ambient musician who help pioneer early electronic music of the region. He’s had a string of self-released cassettes, with this one first released in 1984 and not reissued on vinyl or CD until recently. Matthews drew inspiration from the Berlin School (a 1970s genre associated with progressive electronic artists such as Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream) for his atmospheric, multi-layered melodies that melt together for an intoxicating result that could be dubbed “krautpop” or “neokraut”. Opener “Be Like A Child” sets the mood well with its warm, enticing melodic synth layers backed by an easygoing beat.
