Jacaszek Glimmer
Michal Jacaszek is a Polish musician who, for about a decade, has been composing works of the ambient/modern classical persuasion. His latest record provides a very somber, reflective experience that turns out to be an experimental, nonconformist approach to both genres. To conceive the curiously ornate, subterranean-sounding atmosphere, Jacaszek primarily relies on acoustic/orchestral strings and unpredictable electronic tweaks. For example, opener “Goldengrove” primarily consists of several different clean-sounding string instruments and a metallophone on a foundation of eerie, sensual scratch loops. “Evening Strains To Be Time’s Vast” provides the most intense onslaught of whirling noise toward the end, but for most part, the songwriting is both abstract and mellow throughout. It’s certainly a fascinating take on the ambient genre.

Pterodactyl Spills Out
Based in Brooklyn, these guys draw from several eras for the acid-infused lo-fi psych-pop on their third record. “School Glue” kicks it off with a mix of trippy Animal Collective-reminiscent jovialness and sunny guitar noise, eventually transitioning into the blissfully surf-tinged “Searchers” (later track “The Break” is just one of several great demonstrations of the style, like Wavves experimenting with an artsier sound.) Other tracks, such as the dark, slightly spooky “The Hole Night” and slow-simmering, resonant “Zombies,” give the purest reflection of morose pop psychedelia from the 60s (it reminds me of The Beatles’ more experimental endeavors and, tying into the latter track’s title, The Zombies.) Another standout close to the style is “Allergy Shots,” which mournfully repeats the phrase “the grass isn’t greener” amidst a downtempo bass and nonstop tambourine rhythm.
