Youth Lagoon Wondrous Bughouse
(Fat Possum)
On his sophomore record, Boise-raised Trevor Powers once again sounds far removed from a state associated with potato fields: this time, his fuzzy, blissful and psychedelic dream-pop sounds much more colorful and busy than the mellowed-out, watching-the-clouds-go-by fantasy realm that was 2011’s The Year of Hibernation. First single “Dropla,” for example, goes straight to the playful hook and Powers’ uniquely precocious voice, repeating “you’ll never die” like a child not yet bruised by the harsh realities of life. My favorite is easily the epic five-minute “Pelican Man,” using synth, piano and drums to take off and soar with curious lyrics apparently about being haunted by past mistakes. He again uses an out-of-tune-sounding piano to its full potential in “Attic Doctor,” creating what sounds like a summer-night waltz in Toyland. It’s great that he was smart enough to expand on his sound instead of choosing to make the same thing again.

Slug Guts Playin’ in Time With the Deadbeat
(Sacred Bones)
This Australian sextet showcases a harsh, fried-out post-punk/noise-rock sound on their third album, particularly shaped by a brutal year of arrests, violence and death while on tour. Their harsh, echoed-out sound is drawn from fellow Aussie post-punk bands like The Birthday Party and feedtime, with opening track “Scum” sounding like a midnight surf jam in a rough part of town, haunted by wailing sax spirits dropping by unexpectedly. Others such as the rough pounding “Black Sports” and spooky, creeping title track further help progress the grimy-alleyway atmosphere at an exclamatory volume.
