Delorean Apar
(True Panther Sounds / Mushroom Pillow)
Though they share their name with the time machine used in Back to the Future, this Spanish quartet’s opulent, shimmering alt-dance music is categorized as “Balearic beat:” a style associates with nightclubs on the Mediterranean island of Ibiza. Rather than fast-paced “rave” electronica, though, the style on this record (titled after the Basque word for “froth” or “foam”) leans more toward sunny, catchy synth-pop, with enticing, multi-layered melodies atop steadily pulsing beats. One of my favorites is “Dominion,” with an instantly memorable hook played with what sounds like Far East strings and a chorus that rises like the Sun. “Unhold” is one of the most memorable tracks as well, with Caroline Polachek of Chairlift offering her glistening vocals to the rich, up-all-night instrumentation.
