Úlfur White Mountain
(Western Vinyl)
Also known as Klive, Dataplex and Bitroid, and having played in bands such as Sword of Chaos and the touring band of Jónsi (from Sigur Rós,) Icelandic electronic musician Úlfur Hansson is exploring more territory on his first solo record under his own name. Comprised of field recordings, strings, woodwinds and percussion from Hansson and several other guest musicians, White Mountain navigates through what sounds like an orchestra for the ambience of Nordic terrain. “Heaven In A Wildflower” is easily one of my favorites, blissfully drifting with clarinets, flutes, and violas before an intimate acoustic bass solo. I really liked the rich opener “Evoke Ewok” as well, with the lengthy synth stretches punctuated by bursts of celestial strings.

Califone Stitches
(Dead Oceans)
It’s not easy to categorize this Chicago experimental band’s sound, with these rustic and electronic songs recorded in varying places: according to frontman Tim Rutili, the intention was to make a “schizophrenic record” to “stitch together conflicting textures and feels.” It was written and recorded in Southern California, Arizona and Texas, where “dry landscapes and beaches and hills and shopping malls” served as the inspiration. The title track’s sleepy drum-machine and lengthy electronic streaks capture the feeling well, with lyrics about attempting to start fresh and re-stitching familiar elements. The guitars often give an unmistakable country feel as well, such as the cozy, acoustic “Movie Music Kills a Kiss” and the steel guitars and piano on the sleepy-eyed “moonbath.brainsalt.a.holy.fool,” capturing what feels like a breezy desert at dusk.
