Volcano Choir Repave
(Jagjaguwar)
Hailing from Wisconsin, this indie/post-rock six-piece goes all-out with their grandiose blend of guitars, strings, synth and piano on their second album. They were formed from a collaboration of several Collections of Colonies of Bees members and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, so Volcano Choir’s multi-instrumental, ambient sound has inevitably drawn some Bon Iver comparisons (which Vernon disapproves of but is willing to tolerate.) His versatile singing is the closest real similarity, as the rest of the album’s elements come together for a distinct being. The centerpiece “Byegone” is easily my favorite, using a few minutes to build up for an enormously satisfying climax of crashing cymbals and soaring cellos amidst calls to “set sail!” The unexpected combination of tranquil guitar and bursts of high-speed space-synth made “Comrade” one of my favorites as well, as well as the gorgeous acoustic guitar and dynamic piano-filled opener “Tiderays.”

Suuns Images Du Futur
(Secretly Canadian)
If this Montreal four-piece’s vision of the future is accurate, it’ll be a mechanized, nonchalant-natured world of silvery, minimalist structures basking under a calmly glowing Sun. Suuns’ second album (produced by Jace Lasek from The Besnard Lakes) serves up forty-five minutes of krautrock-influenced electronic rock/post-punk, with endlessly driving beats, sterile guitar and bass and murmured vocals comparable to Clinic. Their minimalist instrumentation works particularly well on tracks such as the humidly lingering “Edie’s Dream” and the menacing, pulsing techno-fied “Bambi,” providing a variety of engaging electronic beats and rich post-punk strumming.
