The Shivas Whiteout
The Shivas Whiteout 300
(K Records)
This Portland, Oregon group is all about a summery, fuzzy, beach-filling atmosphere, with an enticing brand of hook-laden garage/surf rock unafraid of getting awash in feedback every now and then. The Shivas’ shimmering, well-structured riffs certainly sound like a throwback to the earliest surf-pop, with echoed male-female vocals as laid-back as they are sweet. Since I’m a sucker for intoxicating vocal harmonies, I particularly liked sunny tracks such as “Gun In My Pocket” and “No Waves.” Other definite favorites of mine are the consecutive “Kissed in the Face” and “Manimal,” de-emphasizing poppiness in favor of bold, dizzying psychedelic rock, leading to a level of intensity demonstrating that they’re willing to pull out all the stops to leave a sensational mark on the listener.

Lily & Madeleine The Weight of the Globe
Lily & Madeleine The Weight of the Globe 300
(Asthmatic Kitty)
There’s something about this Indianapolis folk-pop duo that immediately struck a chord with the world, leading to hundreds of thousands of YouTube views that helped them sell out their first two live performances (producer Paul Mahern helped them make both this EP and their later self-titled record.) Teenage sisters Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz may not have expected fame, but their music transcends expectations associated with “just another” up-and-coming duo. Their distinct voices and personalities work in excellent harmony, with the younger Lily’s darker voice and taste for rock blending seamlessly with Madeleine’s light, more folksy style, complete with both electric and acoustic guitars, strings, piano and more.  It’s also unexpected for such a young duo to reach such a level of maturity in thoughtful songs including viral hit “In The Middle” (“The way you sing unlocks my heart  / Just like a key, like a key / And brings you right back home to me…”) or another favorite of mine, “Back to the River” If only my feet could fall as fast as a heart does / I would be so long gone…)
