Pujol Kludge
Pujol Kludge
(Saddle Creek)
The word “kludge” can refer to “an ill-assorted collection of poorly matching parts, forming a distressing whole,” but it doesn’t sound like that here: it only refers to the album’s exhausting recording process across several temporary locations. Musically, Daniel Pujol’s sophomore record is energetic and accessible blend of melodic punk and spacey alternative rock, like if the Smashing Pumpkins were injected with a combination of Andrew W.K. and Cheap Trick’s hook-laden energy. The most intense track “Manufactured Crisis Control” is my favorite example of all coming together to pack unrelenting punches, like a blasting journey through a nebula while Pujol shouts about feeling confused because “the old me / and the new me / are in a fistfight.”
