Watter This World
Watter This World
(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
Formed just last year, Watter is an instrumental post-rock trio that includes Grails’ guitarist Zak Riles, Slint’s former drummer Britt Walford and multi-instrumentalist Tyler Trotter from Strike City. The Grails background is the most obvious, with steady percussion and thick, echoing strumming that billows and hangs like the “Rustic Fog” suggested by the title track.” “Bloody Monday” is one of the richest tracks, constructed with easy-going layers of acoustic guitar, violin, synth and more. One of the supporting guest musicians is King Crimson’s Tony Levin, contributing his bass expertise to the compelling “Small Business.”

The Young Chrome Cactus
The Young Chrome Cactus
(Matador)
The latest album from this Austin, Texas indie rock band manages to sound both refreshing and sinister, with rigidly metallic electric guitars and droll vocals. Opener “Metal Flake” chugs along brimming with controlled energy for its memorable, rocking riff, with the rest of the album showing various levels of power. Sometime the guitars bloom with beauty (“Apaches Throat,” “Mercy”) while some Krautrock-influenced moments are soaked in downright menacing feedback (“Dressed In Black,” “Blow The Scum Away.”)
