Leverage Models Leverage Models
Leverage Models Leverage Models
(Hometapes)
On this lively, glistening indie-rock record, producer and multi-instrumentalist Shannon Fields takes a departure from his background involving the experimental/free improvisation act Stars Like Fleas. Leverage Models is more about accessible and danceable songs, multi-layered with breathy, spirited vocals and a huge spectrum of backing instruments. Some of my favorite songs include the funky bass, trumpet and synth number “Too Cold for Magic,” as well as the opulent “Sweep,” beaming with violin from Jim Altieri and additional vocals from Sharon Van Etten.

Aby Ngana Diop Liital [Reissue]
Aby Ngana Diop Liital
(Awesome Tapes From Africa)
A member of the West Africa’s griot class (which includes poets, writers and musicians), Aby Ngana Diop gained superstardom in her native Senegal in the 1980s and 1990s for performing a genre of musical poetry called taasu. Sometimes considered a predecessor to rap, the style primarily involved her exclaiming praise speech as the leader (called a taasukat,) doing a call-and-response style with other griot women as a fittingly tireless and intense rhythm of tama and sabar drums is played. This record was originally released as a cassette in 1994: though it was Diop’s only release before her death in 1997, it continued being popular in her homeland thanks to the influence of her clearly involved energy and passion.
