White Suns
Totem
White Suns Totem 300
(The Flenser)
This New York-based experimental noise rock trio’s third record is an absolutely vicious, unchained beast of shouted vocals, feedback-strewn guitar and tempos that range from utterly frantic to glacial. There’s a persistent feeling of being trapped in a darkened abyss from the volatile frenzy of opener “Priest In The Laboratory” to the final despair of accepting a fate as “Carrion.” There’s variety to the madness, thankfully, with ominous, unsettlingly textured ambient passages such as “Fossil Record” and “Line of Smoke” providing moments for stewing in the pitch-black environment.

David Van Tieghem x Ten Fits & Starts 300
(RVNG Intl. / The Sound of White Columns)
Experimental composer and percussionist David Van Tieghem has been active for over forty years, utilizing any and all available objects and surfaces for rhythm (as he demonstrated on the streets of New York in his 1981 music video “Ear to the Ground.”) Decades later, RVNG Intl. was invited to participate in a group exhibition called Bulletin Boards, in which they were provided a space with a blank board to attach any objects they wanted. They invited not only Van Tieghem but ten other experimental musicians and acts (Sam Hillmer as Diamond Terrifier with Max Alper, Roberto Carlos Lange as Helado Negro, etc.) to attach items, which would include drums, 2x4s, firecrackers and more. On the exhibition’s opening night, Van Tieghem gave an unannounced performance to be recorded, sent to the artists for remixing, then sent back to him for a final reworking. The final result is an ever-changing stream of not only improvised and tribal-sounding percussion but additional elements such as spooky synth and ambient effects to bring it together.
