This Will Destroy You Another Language
This Will Destroy You Another Language
(Suicide Squeeze)
On their third album, this San Marcos, Texas-based instrumental rock band flows between delicate guitar/synth landscapes and massively loud crescendos of sound. They call the new blend of doom metal and shoegaze “doomgaze” (they hate being called post-rock): the result is like a score for an awe-inspiring gaze at the barren beauty of deserts and mountains. One of my favorites is the seven-and-a-half minute “War Prayer,” with guitar and synth that seems to conjure up mournful history between the fiery walls of sound.

Swamp Dogg
Gag A Maggot [Reissue]
Swampp Doggggg
(Alive)
Known as Little Jerry and Little Jerry Williams in the 50s and 60s, R&B and soul musician Jerry Williams, Jr. reinvented himself as Swamp Dogg (no relation to Snoop) in the 70s. His colorful persona definitely shows on this 1973 record (funky enough “to gag a maggot,” as he intended), whether he’s making love to your woman while you’re out cheating (“Wife Sitter”) or his self-explanatory love song “I Couldn’t Pay For What I Got Last Night.”
