Julianna Barwick Nepenthe
(Dead Oceans)
This Louisiana-born, Missouri-raised and now Brooklyn-based ethereal/ambient musician reminds me of what Enya might sound like on an experimental path, with heavy use of multi-layered vocals and surreal synth for an otherworldly celestial sound. The title of her latest album refers to the sorrow-curing magical drug found in ancient Greek literature: her somber mood came from not only a death in the family, but the introspection while recording this album in Iceland on dark February days. The looped sounds (vocals, strings, etc.) and unconventional structures make it easy to get lost in the huge-sounding scope of the emotional composing experience. It’s not surprising that it was produced by Alex Somers of Sigur Rós (several other Icelandic musicians – such as string band Amiina – also contributed.)
