Radio Moscow Magical Dirt

Hailing from Story City, Iowa is this trio who sound like the perfect synthesis of hard 60s and 70s psychedelic and blues rock. Their attitude-filled vocals and exceptionally advanced Stratocaster work – executed with great energy to match – help them stand out above countless forgettable bar bands. The impact sounds especially natural now that singer-guitarist Parker Griggs hired a drummer rather than handling the instrument separately through multi-tracking.

Braids Deep in the Iris

Here’s a Canadian art-rock band (formed in Calgary and now Montreal-based) whose pretty sound consists of elements such as electronic beats, resonant piano and lead singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston’s hypnotic, malleable vocals. Her wide vocal range really helps give a surreal feel to the already bright instrumentation. One of the highlights is “Miniskirt,” taking a stand against the double-standards of gender that include objectifying her for wearing that article of clothing.
