Young Widows Easy Pain
Young_Widows_-_Easy_Pain(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
The fourth album from this Louisville, Kentucky trio is another slab of incredibly loud, heavy and disconcerting noise rock and post-punk, reminding me of Unsane’s slam. One easy highlight is “Kerosene Girl”: the bass pulses like a shark going in for the kill while the lyrics take the perspective of an antisocial guy who torches a girl’s house instead of trying to meet her.

Lonesome Shack More Primitive
LonesomeShackART(Alive)
Born as a one-man band in 2004 before ending up a three-piece, this Seattle-based act is all about the blues, sounding as dusty and solitary as the name implies but also surprisingly groovy. They describe it as “haunted boogie blues,” with melancholy lyrics backed with twanging guitar melodies that it’s hard to resist grooving along to. The talent shines even on the most “primitive”-sounding track “Trying to Forget”, showcasing an intricate acoustic guitar melody recorded in what certainly sounds like a shack.
