Jacques Le Coque
Hooky
Jacques Le Coque Hooky(King Pizza)
Here’s a full-length cassette of rock ‘n’ roll from right here in Connecticut (Stamford, to be specific.) Jacques Le Coque is a four-piece band whose garage rock/power pop is fuzzy, refreshing and, as the title suggests, hooky, with catchy odes to romantic themes such as feelings for an uninterested girl (“Can’t Keep Away”) or being too naughty for an overprotected girl (the acoustic “Got It Bad”). “Pass It Around” is a favorite of mine, sounding like an ode to fast-paced classic Ramones punk.

Ava Luna Infinite House
Ava Luna – Infinite House(Western Vinyl)
The third full-length from this kinetic, artsy New York indie rock quintet was inspired by an abandoned house discovered during a writing retreat in Benton, Mississippi. The overgrown, labyrinthine and overall mysterious nature of the place had an impact on Ava Luna’s creative process (the title track sounds like a wonder-filled, uptempo tribute to the house.) One standout track is the freely-breathing, jazz-percussion-driven “Steve Polyester”, telling a quirky story about said person who says “I am a landscape, I am a ruby lined in gold, shaped like a cockroach, I smell good.”
