Loma Prieta
Self Portrait
Loma Prieta Self Portrait(Deathwish)
With a name inspired by a 1989 Northern California earthquake that killed sixty-three people (most of whom were motorists crushed in a double-deck freeway collapse,) this San Francisco screamo/post-hardcore band has an intense, gripping and noisy sound that incorporates a surprising amount of melody on their fifth full-length. Amid the uncompromising, screeching chaos are some unexpected bursts of uptempo-sounding daylight: “Roadside Cross”, for example, has a triumphant-sounding chorus amid lyrics like “how many people are destroyed by their need to be loved?”
