Rangda The Heretic’s Bargain
Rangda - Heretics Bargain(Drag City)
Named after a Balinese demon queen, Rangda is an experimental trio who play dark instrumental psychedelic rock. The first three tracks (totaling about twelve minutes) are pretty easily accessible psych-guitar rock that creates a spooky, sly mood (seemingly reminiscent of film noir like Naked City.) That changes with the nearly eight-minute crawl “Hard Times Befall the Door-to-Door Glass Shard Salesman”, primarily comprised of screeching guitar feedback that gives way to drawn-out, mournful strumming. The second side consists solely of the nineteen-minute epic “Mondays Are Free at the Hermetic Museum”, which builds a foreboding atmosphere in the first half before going for a lighter drone in the second.

Nap Eyes
Whine of the Mystic
Nap Eyes Whine of the Mystic(Paradise of Bachelors / You’ve Changed)
Here’s the debut record from a Nova Scotian indie rock band who play compelling, easy-to-follow guitar pop. Since it was recorded live with no overdubs, it maintains an organic, folksy sound that drives along smoothly. One unexpected moment is the surf-rock “Tribal Thoughts”, with singer-songwriter Nigel Chapman “drinking every thought in / like it was the first one.”
