Dead Moon Stranded In the Mystery Zone [Reissue]
Dead Moon Stranded In The Mystery Zone(M’lady’s)
Active from 1987 to 2006, this Portland, Oregon-based garage punk band had a stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll sound (mastered on the same mono lathe used by the Kingsmen for “Louie, Louie”) that found most of its success in Europe (though Eddie Vedder/Pearl Jam did cover some of their music too.) This is a reissue of their fourth album: originally released on Tombstone Records in 1991, it captures their raw, monaural garage sound with themes such as reflections on never reaching stardom (“Sorrow’s Forecast”) or a simple lament for a girl who left (“Jane”).

Comprised of Matthew Cooper (a.k.a. Eluvium) and Mark T. Smith (one of the guitarists for Explosions in the Sky), it’s no surprise that this project’s styles include experimental, ambient and post-rock (since releasing this debut, they’ve also released a follow-up called Maze of Woods and some singles.) Their instruments include synth, strings, guitar and wordless vocals, with the result being calming and fascinating. “Sun Locations/Sun Coda” is one of the most interesting tracks, with thumping percussion and odd synth sounds that swell for a massive-sounding experience.
