Spit-Take Queen’s Pawn Game

I saw this three-piece New Haven, CT indie band open for Perennial and White Lung. Their style can be described as emo-punk, with this seven-inch featuring catchy, loud and aggressively-delivered songs about topics such as wanting to watch someone fall (“Hide My Eyes”) and struggling to make an ideal song come together (“Nothing Ever Comes True”.)

Muscle & Marrow Love

Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Kira Clark and multi-instrumentalist Keith McGraw, Muscle & Marrow have a dark dungeon-crawl of a sound on their sophomore album with elements of drone and doom metal, but also tribal percussion and pulsing synth. Musically, it can be as heavy as sludge, but Clark’s hauntingly beautiful vocals give it a uniquely emotional, mournful feel (it was written shortly after Clark lost a family member.) It’s not all about loss, though, as there are also themes of feminism and female archetypes: Clark finds it “cathartic and alluring” to delve into feminine madness.
