Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires Dereconstructed
(Sub Pop)
The music of Lee Bains III and his band consists of a mix of raucous, fuzzed-out Southern rock ‘n’ roll and punk with lyrics concerning the mixed legacy of the region (the band is listed as residing in Atlanta, Georgia and Birmingham, Alabama.) Specifically, Bains is critical of Southern values and how they affect him: the title track, for example, describes standing up for himself despite being raised on “ancient truths and ugly old lies”. “Flags” is intense as well, referencing the same “old flag” that flew during the time of slavery, as well as his town’s “believers” blowing up women’s clinics while acting offended by Muslims.
