The Holydrug Couple
(Sacred Bones)
Formed in 2008, The Holydrug Couple is a Santiago, Chile-based duo that plays intoxicating psychedelic dream-pop. Vocalist-guitarist-bassist-keyboardist Ives Sepúlveda and drummer Manuel Parra create hypnotic synthesizer-based music that evokes an intimate, 80s-flavored starry-night mood on this third record. “French Movie Theme” is definitely one of the instrumental highlights, but Sepúlveda also showcases his versatile crooning on a several tracks such as “Baby, I’m Going Away”, about having to leave a lover but hoping to return someday.

The Prettiots
Funs Cool
(Rough Trade)
Compromised of core members Kay Kasparhauser and Lulu Landolfi, The Prettiots are an NYC-based alternative/indie-pop act who create impactful and blunt songs despite a bubblegum, ukulele-driven exterior. While a track like “Boys (That I Dated in Highschool)” is a playful reminiscence of exactly what the title states, “Suicide Hotline” features Kasparhauser comparing her mood to that of figures like Plath and Hemingway; she brushes off concerns by stating “I’m not fine but I’ll be okay / I probably won’t kill myself today.” The duo also give their sunny-but-dark treatment to two very different songs: the Misfits’ “Skulls” and Dolly Parton’s “Me and Little Andy”.
