Joan of Arc
He’s Got the Whole This Land is Your Land in His Hands
(Joyful Noise)
Formed in Chicago after the 1995 breakup of emo band Cap’n Jazz, indie band Joan of Arc have a sound that’s unusual to say the least: their electronics and sample-based songs have lyrics and titles that are nothing short of bizarre. “This Must Be The Placenta”, for example, features lead singer (and only permanent member) Tim Kinsella singing lyrics like “pizza and cunnilingus both give me heartburn” and “I’ve had a 26-year-old girlfriend since the day I turned 11” over an engaging rhythm with a computerized sample loop.

THEESatisfaction EarthEE
(Sub Pop)
Comprised of singer Catherine “Cat” Harris-White and rapper Stasia “Stas” Irons, Seattle-based duo THEESatisfaction created music that blended chillout electronics with R&B, hip-hop, soul and jazz fusion (they ended the group last year.) This second and final album showcases a great synthesis of their style (inspired by “Earth, humanity, reality and insanity” as they say in the liner notes) with the culturally-empowering “Recognition” being an easy highlight.
