Jackie Greene Back to Birth
(Yep Roc)
Born in Salinas, California, folk and Americana singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jackie Greene has toured with numerous bands (he was also a member of The Black Crowes’ final formation, as well as The Grateful Dead’s bassist’s ensemble Phil Lesh and Friends.) Greenes’ passionate roots-rock sound includes his vocals, guitars, piano, harmonica and more, crafting a varied, refreshing sound that feels like a road trip across America’s musical landscape.

Sarah Bethe Nelson Fast Moving Clouds
(Burger)
On this debut album (she’s also released the follow-up Oh, Evolution), this San Francisco singer-songwriter performs summery-sounding indie rock with pop elements. One of my favorites is the surf-pop “Impossible Love”, using breezy, sunny instrumentation while describing an unworkable relationship. Lead single “Paying” is definitely a highlight, with a relaxing starry-night guitar sound and layered vocals from the perspective of a bartender refusing to keep supporting a moocher.
