Warehouse
Super Low
(Bayonet)
This Atlanta quintet’s sound could be described as art-punk meets jangle pop, with lean, glossy melodies joined by Elaine Edenfield’s uniquely gruff vocals. Written in a soon-to-be-demolished punk house and finished across from a food market called “Super Low”, the album incorporates interestingly cryptic lyrics inspired by searching inside one’s dark psyche to try to resolve problems. One highlight is the complicated love song “Reservoir”, full of contradictory lyrics centered around searching for meaning while maintaining a tough relationship.

Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators
Happiness in Every Style
(Timmion)
With a career dating back to the mid-80s (when she contributed vocals to the group Washington Week in Review in London), Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter and producer-director Nicole Willis has had many projects incorporating her versatile voice for genres such as acid jazz, disco and, of course, soul. She’s lived in Finland since the start of the 2000s, collaborating with local group The Soul Investigators since 2005. This is the final record she made with them, providing engaging melodies and a generally positive, celebratory mood thanks to feel-good throwback funk and soul on tracks such as the sunny lead single “One in a Million”.
