It’s A Myth
(Merge)
Washington, D.C.-based Eva Moolchan creates music that’s a unique blend of minimalist techno and deadpan vocals. Coupled with a groovy bass moving in unconventional patterns and energetic beats, the resulting sound is like a post-punk/no wave dance party. It’s impressively compelling for consisting solely of bass, drum machine and vocals: “PBNJ” is one of my favorites for utilizing a simple but catchy bass melody matched with breathy and half-sung/half-spoken vocals.

Bry Webb Free Will
(Idée Fixe)
Best known as the vocalist for the Ontario indie rock band Constantines (which reformed in 2010), Webb composed and sang a dozen tracks of smoky and tender country-folk for this latest album. Tinged with lap and pedal steel (courtesy of guest musicians), these are stripped-down-sounding odes to trials of everyday life, such as feelings of isolation and broken relationships. “Prove Me Wrong”, for example, reflects the unease of a weakened (or ended) love by challenging one to tell their true feelings.
