Strange Wilds Subjective Concepts
(Sub Pop)
This Olympia, Washington trio certainly reflects the Pacific Northwest alternative and punk sound, capturing the raw, heavy ferocity of early grunge like Nirvana, Mudhoney and Melvins. Opener “Pronoia” (a title that refers to the belief that the world is trying to help rather than hurt you) features singer-guitarist Steven’s bitter lyrics (“there are no more innocents / we’re guilty in every way”) delivered with sullen verses and shouted choruses. Another favorite is “Autothysis” (the “suicidal altruism” in termites and ants who destroy themselves by self-rupturing) with lyrics referring to someone with a head full of dreams but no outlet for them.
