Dr. Demento Covered in Punk
(Demented Punk / Caf Muzeck)
Though he’s best known as the DJ to thank for introducing the world to countless humorous and offbeat musicians for decades (particularly “Weird Al” Yankovic), music historian and diehard record collector Barret Hansen (best known as Dr. Demento) also helped give punk rock exposure in its early days. That spirit is reflected on this roller-coaster ride of an album: spanning over two hours, it features a diverse mix of musicians covering various novelty (or just plain amusing) songs, broken up by Demento’s between-song commentary for a real radio-show feel. For example, the classic Ramones song “Beat on the Brat” (which got airplay on the show when it was new) gets the animated accordion-rock treatment from Weird Al, backed by pop-punk band Osaka Popstar (likewise, all-female Osaka punk trio Shonen Knife do a unique cover of Al’s “Eat It” which incorporates Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” riff.) Some of my other favorites include Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ pure-rock’n’roll take on The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s “Science Fiction/Double Feature”; Brak’s unforgettably hilarious butchering of Suicidal Tendencies’ “Institutionalized”; The Vandals’ rocking rendition of Tom Lehrer’s cynical “National Brotherhood Week” and – in one of his very last performances – Adam West doing a loveable cover of the 1950 Phil Harris novelty hit “The Thing”.

Kishi Bashi String Quartet Live!
(Joyful Noise)
Born in Seattle, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kaoru Ishibashi (who performs under the name Kishi Bashi) founded the electronic rock band Jupiter One and was an Of Montreal member from 2010 to 2012. This album features lush all-string-and-vocal renditions from his 151a and Lightght albums, as well as an elegant cover of Talking Heads’ classic love song “This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody)”. One of my favorites is “Atticus, In The Desert”, which conjures up an adventurous, emotional mood with its unmistakable Middle Eastern-influenced strings.
