Kayo Dot Plastic House on Base of Sky
(Flenser)
Always in a state of evolution, Kayo Dot are a Boston-spawned (and now Brooklyn-based) avant-garde project founded and led by vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Toby Driver. It’s difficult to put their complex sound to words: it includes electronic, goth, jazz, classical, and even progressive black metal elements. This seventh full-length album makes extensive use of vintage synthesizers for elaborate, immense-sounding fantasy works that, coupled with Driver’s echoed vocals, remind me of huge celestial architecture (also “dead satellites”, “trashed space stations” and “a hopeless dead and polluted world” according to him.)

Lee Hazlewood
Something Special [Reissue]
(Light in the Attic)
Born in Oklahoma, raised in Texas and a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, singer-songwriter and producer Lee Hazlewood got his start in the music business as a DJ in the mid-1950s. He became a composer and producer as a powerhouse for artists like Duane Eddy and Nancy Sinatra, with his work yielding over thirty-six million record sales. One of his many solo albums was 1968’s “Something Special”: originally released only in Germany, it features Hazlewood’s warm, light humor-tinged country and pop demos in their original forms that other artists would later record (Dean Martin, for example, did “Shades” and Frank Sinatra recorded “This Town”.)
