Godspeed You! Black Emperor Luciferian Towers
(Constellation)
Six albums into their career, this Montreal post-rock collective show that they can still create thoughtful, epic-sounding instrumentals that are both morose and uplifting. Reflecting these dark and troubled times (they “aimed for wrong notes that explode, a quiet muttering amplified heavenward” and listed demands such as “an end to borders” and “the total dismantling of the prison–industrial complex”), they use strings, guitars, organ, bass and drums to invoke dramatic moods. My favorite track “Bosses Hang”, for example, soars with a massive-sounding hook and meticulous strings (their live performance is accompanied by projected Koyaanisqatsi-style footage of skyscrapers and stock tickers.)

Bob Mould Patch the Sky
(Merge)
Formerly the lead singer and guitarist for Hüsker Dü and Sugar, Bob Mould (whom I saw by chance at an in-store performance at Amoeba Music Hollywood several years ago) still sounds furiously energetic on this twelfth solo album. The title references a vision he had of people being shot through the “fabric of the sky”, like how people in his life had left at various times and his response was to “patch the sky” and move on (this included various relationships ending and the loss of his mother.) Through a wall of explosive alternative rock, Mould also sings about themes such as trying to avoid being manipulated (“Voices in My Head”) or the more abstract imagery of “Lucifer and God” (“Crucified, where’s your money? / You decide, you always try / There’s lots of poison in your soul / But what’s inside your rabbit hole?”).
