The Soft Moon
Deeper
(Captured Tracks)
Here’s a post-punk/darkwave project based in Oakland, California that’s composed, performed and engineered almost entirely by one person: Luis Vasquez (he has one person credited for mixing and mastering the record, and has several backing musicians for live shows.) His pulsing, ghostly industrial rock is unmistakably nocturnal, like a jet-black car cruising a stark urban area at midnight (the menacing first single “Black”, with a whispered mantra about living life one’s own way, was featured in the shows Gotham and How to Get Away With Murder.) One of my other favorites is the deathly “Without”, using a slow, morose piano to convey the experience of still feeling someone’s presence even after they’re gone.

Naytronix
Mister Divine
(City Slang)
This solo experimental indie pop project comes from multi-instrumentalist and singer Nate Brenner (he also plays bass guitar for Merrill Garbus’ tUnE-yArDs project.) His breezy style features a dreamy psychedelic concoction of instruments (including his lively bass) and reverb-soaked vocals for songs that are both offbeat and accessible, as evidenced in the opening title track. “The Wall”, for examples, features brisk percussion, sampled brass and twanging guitar for a fascinating result.
