Optiganally Yours O.Y. In Hi-Fi
(Joyful Noise)
The Optigan (short for “optical organ”) was a 1970s Mattel keyboard that utilized celluloid optical discs to create a huge variety of sounds. After musician Pea Hix found one of the keyboards at a Salvation Army in 1995, he began collecting them and soon formed a collaboration with his friend Rob Crow (Pinback, Heavy Vegetable, Physics, etc.) The resulting music was a fascinating and charming mix of warmly nostalgic lo-fi instrumentation and Crow’s breezy vocals, with Optiganally Yours releasing albums in 1997 and 2000 (the latter of which used two other similar – but different branded – retro optical keyboards.) Eventually, Hix discovered several master tapes of Optigan instrumentals (some of which were unreleased) in a SoCal garage, thus allowing the duo to use them for high-fidelity music in place of the grainier-sounding mass-market discs. This makes for a particularly engrossing listen, such as the hypnotic early-electronic tapestry that makes up “Whomever Watches You Sleep”.

The Clientele Music for the Age of Miracles
(Merge)
Formed in London in 1991, this indie-pop band creates a gorgeous, regal sound with its shining, reverb-filled music, reminiscent of 1970s folk rock with acoustic guitar, strings and breathy vocals for an autumnal mood on this album. The six-and-a-half minute “Falling Asleep” is one of my favorites for its dream-like imagery (“ghost of remembered chords / which still can make such radiance…”) Frontman Alasdair MacLean tells a poignant story on the spoken-word “The Museum of Fog”: backed by nostalgic-evoking instrumentation, he tells an emotional story of going to a bar alone and seeing a band whose sound powerfully brings him back to his teenage days.
