Ava Luna Moon 2
(Western Vinyl)
Now a five-piece, this artsy Brooklyn band has progressed to a more accessible (as suggested by the opening track) blend of indie rock, dance-punk, R&B, funk and soul as opposed to their more dissonant past work. Their sound is now laden with smooth, space-y synth, intricate beats and multi-layered vocals that make for an intoxicating concoction. After vocalist/synth player Becca Kauffman found a stash of “women’s tapes – recordings of neo-pagan goddess chants from 90’s women’s lib groups” at a garage sale, she decided to incorporate similar chanting into these songs as an in-joke shared among band members. My favorite songs are some of the liveliest ones like the kinetic “Centerline”, along with “Deli Run” and its funky bassline.
