Mono
Nowhere Now Here
(Temporary Residence Ltd.)
Now in their twentieth year, Japanese post-rock band Mono still craft an emotional and compelling, film score-like experience on this tenth studio album. Though they prefer not to classify their music to particular genres, the hour-long Nowhere Now Here resembles a hybrid of contemporary classical and multi-faceted, mostly-instrumental rock ranging from crashing and heavy (“After You Comes the Flood”) to tender and bittersweet (the piano-and-strings number “Parting”.) “Breathe” is the most unexpected from the band, featuring a foundation of alien-sounding synth that’s topped with a Mono first: vocals from bassist and multi-instrumentalist Tamaki Kunishi, who’s been with the band since the start and sounds absolutely poignant.
