Spellling Mazy Fly

Here’s the second album from Bay Area-based Chrystia Cabral, whose Spellling project could be described as a eerie and experimental take on electronic pop. Inspired by humanity’s unending use of technology for devastation instead of good, she utilizes her sweet and malleable voice to its full potential to complement the multi-layered synthesizers and drum machines. The resulting sounds paint a foreboding atmosphere: “Haunted Water” channels the lost souls still haunting the Middle Passage (a set of routes for Atlantic slave ships), conveyed with mournful vocals and synth for a particularly entrancing listen. With additional instruments including guitar, strings and church organ, “Secret Thread” is like a hazy sunrise that partly dispels the darkness (it was inspired by a winged spirit Cabral imagined while watching her puppy run through a field.)
