X
Los Angeles [Reissue]
(Fat Possum)
Formed in Los Angeles in 1977 and together again after a late-90s hiatus (they’re touring the U.S. this summer), X remain one of the most acclaimed first-wave punk bands thanks in part to this debut album from 1980. Los Angeles is an energetic mixture of punk and classic rockabilly / rock ‘n roll that sounds fun musically while painting a dark, gritty picture of the city (the title track, for example, is all about wanting to leave.) It’s also worth noting that iconic Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek did double duty: he not only produced the record but played on a number of tracks, including the delightfully unsettling “Nausea.”
