Lightning Bolt
Sonic Citadel
(Thrill Jockey)
It’s hard to believe it’s been a quarter-century since this Providence, Rhode Island duo first formed at the Rhode Island School of Design, honing their brand of uncompromising noise rock with little more than a bass guitar, drums and vocals (they used to have a third member as guitarist-vocalist who left in 1996.) Now on their seventh album (and second for Thrill Jockey after leaving the now-defunct Load) they still manage to sound fresh thanks to varied melodies and effects that keep the atmosphere compelling as their beloved 2003 album Wonderful Rainbow. For example, opener “Blow to the Head” is like synchronized tapestry of tiny explosions, “Halloween 3” delves into a brain-bending psychedelic-noise freakout, and the more chill, bright-sounding “Don Henley in the Park” sounds simultaneously uplifting and dissonant to stay true to the band’s well-established sound.
