Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 3

Wednesday Weekly Video Volume 3

Techno Animal (Technological Animal) was (last active in 2004) a project of Justin K. Broadrick (Godflesh, Napalm Death, Jesu, … and most recently JK Flesh – which is a moniker many associate directly with Techno Animal) & Kevin Martin (The Bug, King Midas Sound, Black Chow, Experimental Audio Research,…). This track is from 1997 and I honestly picked it because it is one of the couple tracks that actually has a video (and not a static picture). It definitely stands along side of some of the earlier ATR/Alec Empire material – acidic hip-hop laced harsh d’n’b.

Kontravoid – Native State (Official Video) from Kontravoid on Vimeo.
Just got this 7″ in yesterday (“Cut to Cleanse” is the B-Side). I guess Cameron Findlay (the artist behind this project who was also in the electonic pop group Parallels) played drums for Crystal Castles which some find notable, but really this stands on its own merit as great cold dark pop.

The album this is on was on my (Rick) best of list for 2011 and it still gets plenty of play (like right now – the LP is on in the store this second and it’s actually on this song). Great track for walking along blankly glaring in the direction of your shoes.

Amenra is a European post-metal (Neurosis, Isis) band that’s been around for 13 years or so. If you dig sweaty riffs that jam on for days, this is for you.

Trust – Bulbform from Arts & Crafts on Vimeo.
Our friend Ryan came in today and told us how he can’t stop listening to this album (“TRST” by Trust). Both of us (Rick and Josh) totally empathize with that sentiment. Don’t mind us weirdos we’re just dancing in our heads.

I was sort of bummed out that I missed the boat on seeing Refused when they recently played New York. Fun fact: in the very early stages of planning to open Redscroll, I debated naming the store, “New Noise”. -Josh

Over the top post apocalyptic gang violence set to Twin Shadows’s “Five Seconds”.

The Big Pink Future This

(4AD)
This London duo (Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell) serves up another record of passionate, synth-tinged indie-pop. With its high production values and enticing hooks, it’s easily accessible throughout – thankfully, though, they seasoned it with plenty of fuzzed-out effects throughout to make it especially resonant. For example, opening track “Stay Gold” and “Rubbernecking” have a powerfully jubilant, head-bobbing sound that should definitely appeal to fans of Sleigh Bells. Others, like “The Palace” and “Lose Your Mind,” reminded me of 80s pop with meticulous keyboard details and echo-y vocals. They’re great at conveying multiple moods; it’s particularly apparent when the record closes with the surprisingly melancholy “77.”

White Load Wayne’s World III b/w Godfather IV

(Load)
I’m impressed by how tight this Providence trio sounds, even when playing “black out drunk” as side two is described. Imagine hardcore punk (early Dwarves comes to mind) boiled down to its very essence: a raucous and just plain loud mix of quick-and-to-the-point songs with shouted vocals, a guitar that sounds thoroughly caked in mud and an eardrum-pounding beat that seldom takes a rest. Recorded at a place called “Vomit’s Hole,” side one sounds more “polished” (which I use in the absolute loosest sense of the word,”) while side two sounds the most “live,” primarily consisting of even-rougher versions of the tracks on side one. Needless to say, despite the obvious cliché of the sentiment, these guys truly do rock hard.

Casiokids Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen CD/LP

(Polyvinyl Record Co.)
Here’s some catchy synthpop from Norway. This record (which translates as “the revelation over the mountain”) is the quartet’s second U.S. release. It doesn’t require any knowledge of the Norwegian vocals to enjoy the invigorating harmonies, particularly the impressively tight sounds produced with their namesake keyboard. The percussion-free instrumental title track is an interesting choice of introduction, sounding like a perfect theme for a mournful film artistically portraying a European town’s skyline. The danceable, head-bobbing elements kick in when it transitions into “Det Haster!,” creating the impression of transforming an old-world style into a modern one. This style sets the foundation for the record’s high points, including the sunny, summer-ready “Golden Years” and the thick, pulsing and cooled-down instrumental “Kaskaden.” The intensely melodic “Selskapets Triste Avslutning” had some additional creative support from several of Montreal members who were visiting Bergen during the album’s final recording stages.

Trust TRST CD/LP

(Arts & Crafts)
After hearing a 7″ and a 12″ on Sacred Bones (especially the 12″) I was sold on this band. Dark dance music that would have fit in at the Bat Cave (London or NYC/Albion). I got the opportunity to see them open for Balam Acab late last year too. My hopes were confirmed manifold. This LP further demonstrates their creepy sexual greatness.
