Black Moth Super Rainbow Cobra Juicy

(Rad Cult)
On their fifth full-length, this mysterious Pittsburgh-based experimental band further explores their well-established sound of sun-tinged, lo-fi neo-psychedelia. The most crucial elements of their wistful Candyland-on-acid atmosphere are the lush, colorful walls of synth paired with lead vocalist Tobacco’s lush, moody vocoder voice: both are omnipresent here yet again. Tracks such as opener “Windshield Smasher” and “Hairspray Heart” surprised me by setting a groovy rock-and-roll foundation, while “Psychic Love Damage” expresses light-headed romance with delicate strums gliding in a way that reminds me a bit of “Free Bird.” Sweetly textured songs such as “Like a Sundae” and “Dreamsicle Bomb” feel closer to the original, more synth-driven sound that feels like exploring lands made out of totally edible sweets. Closing track “Spraypaint” demonstrates the most resonant expression of love, emphasizing that “I can’t be without you” as the backing synth flourishes like sunlight filling a room.

PAWS Cokefloat!

(Fat Cat)
This Glasgow, Scotland-based trio’s debut full-length excellently captures their sunny, fittingly lo-fi garage rock. Right from the beginning, lead singer Phillip Taylor sings a catchy, reminiscent tribute to his mother whom he lost to cancer: though he’d “trade anything” to hear her voice again, he finds solace by repeating the sentiment that “life goes on.” The hard-rocking “Bloodline” explores the same theme by recalling that she stays alive because, along with advice, she gave him her nose and eyes. “Homecoming” uses cathartic sarcasm to thank someone ten years after high school, complete with revenge by means of a lead pipe to the teeth. These kinds of tracks let out sadness with youthful, fist-pumping energy; it’s much better than dwelling too much on trying to gain uncomfortable sympathy from others. Taylor, of course, is no stranger to realistic, relatable mood changes: for example, he ladles out slow-simmering angst on the acoustic ballad “Get Bent,” angrily directed toward a thoughtless, destructive father who just can’t seem to listen. He gets the most aggressive on the heavy, to-the-point “Winners Don’t Bleed,” primarily screaming to get someone to shut up.

Konx-om-Pax  Regional Surrealism
(Planet Mu)

It’s easy to compare this full-length debut with the work of fellow Scottish electronic visionaries Boards of Canada, but Glasgow-based musician/visual artist Tom Scholefield creates a sound more like the score of an abstract, intergalactic film. Sometimes the synth ambience is quite soothing, such as the foreboding-yet-hauntingly-beautiful wide-open sound of “Isotonic Pool” and the flowery cyber-meadow that backs Steven Retchard’s low-pitched spoken words on “Sura-Tura-Gnosi-Cosi.” Others take a different approach: “Twin Portal Redux” starts with a shrill machine-stutter atop waves of rich synth before transitioning into a more divided, loudly whooshing synth and electric chirping. “Hurt Face,” on the other hand, begins with harsh, carbonized crackles and glitches and ends with a ghostly aura. The brightly lit synthesized tapestry “Pillars of Creation” is a personal favorite, as is the most B.o.C.-esque track: happily nostalgic closer “Let’s Go Swimming” feels just like a blurry, comforting memory.

Bear in Heaven I Love You, It’s Cool

(Hometapes / Dead Oceans)
This Brooklyn indie trio first came into being as a solo project from Jon Philpot in 2003. With permanent members now, the band creates a lush sound that mixes krautrock, psychedelia and electronic ambience. Their third record was previewed on their website in an incredibly stretched-out form, with 2,700 consecutive hours of drone. Now at normal speed, it feels like an endlessly shimmering recollection of 80s memories, with resonant vocals, driving beats and countless layers of warm synth. “The Reflection of You” is an immediate standout, starting off with a jovial Animal Collective-sounding melody that becomes the foundation for moody walls of synth and confident lyrics (“there’s nothing left between us / so dance with me…”) I personally really enjoyed the glittering galactic sounds and cosmos-pondering lyrics of “Space Remains” as well. “Sinful Nature” takes a darker, sunset-into-night sound with a sadly echoing guitar amidst lyrics telling the listener to deal with life’s disappointments by getting drunk to “make strange things come true.”

Charles Gayle Trio Streets

(Northern Spy)
One of the most prominent figures in free jazz, the now 73-year-old Charles Gayle was homeless for roughly two decades before he started releasing albums in 1988. On his newest record in five years, Gayle lets his tenor saxophone flow freely while bassist Larry Roland and drummer Michael TA Thompson back him up. Gayle’s style incorporates loud, circuitous passages that shriek and contort wildly as the shadowy-sounding bass and kinetic drums bring together the controlled chaos (with the uncompromising closer “Tribulations” fitting the “chaotic” definition best.) Even with the lack of vocals, he successfully uses his instrument to express great fervor, such as the bright and spiritually motivated “Glory and Jesus.” His two supporting musicians stand out well throughout, such as Roland’s mournfully melodic strum solo in the second half of the title track.
