AU Both Lights LP/CD

(Hometapes)
Luke Wyland and Dana Valatka make up the duo from Portland, Oregon known as AU. Long since there last LP in 2008, “Verbs,” AU returns with their third album, Both Lights. Experimenting with sounds, Both Lights has something for every listener, genre blending at its finest, from folk to jazz and pop to rock n’ roll. With energetic Wyland on keys and guitar and Valatka playing unique percussion, Both Lights is incredibly exciting with a new twist at every track. Appearances from saxophonist Colin Stetson (Bon Iver and Arcade Fire), and vocalist Holland Andrews, amongst many others add to the wide range of influences found on this album. Songs you will be playing over and over again include ‘Epic’ , ‘OJ’, their first single ‘Solid Gold’, ‘Why I Must’ and ‘Don’t Lie Down’. Forty minutes and eleven tracks later, AU will have you in a delightfully happy mood! Definitely pick up a copy of Both Lights when it comes out on April 3rd.

The Saddest Landscape After The Lights LP/CD

(Topshelf Records)
“After The Lights” is the newest album from screamo pioneers The Saddest Landscape. After being a band for over a decade it’s safe to say these guys know how to keep this genre refreshing and exciting, and this new album is no exception. It consists of seven emotionally raw tracks that are as aggressive as they are depressed. Andy Maddox vocalizes the lyrics with an almost uncertain tone to his voice, making them frail at times, but extremely powerful and heartfelt. The guitars and drums really drive these feelings to the listener, demanding your attention. This is a serious ear grabber, and raises the bar for this new wave of screamo bands. Also, any band that opens up their live set with the intro of “Burning Fight” by Inside Out automatically gets a gold sticker in my mind.

[P.S. They’re playing The Space on March 18th and perhaps next month somewhere very close perhaps on Record Store Day perhaps.]

Total Fucking Destruction Hater CD

(Translation Loss / Waylon Recordings)
This aptly named side project of Brutal Truth drummer Richard Hoak delivers 27 tracks of absolutely pummeling, exhausting grindcore in 27 minutes. The trio has an excellent handle on the chaos, musically sounding more like an out-of-control shredding machine than an organic group of humans. Thankfully, there’s plenty of variation thrown in as well, with tracks like “Everything You Need But Nothing You Want” and “Dudehammer” temporarily drifting into some genuinely melodic metal grooves. At 3 minutes and 10 seconds, the longest track “I Not Pose” stands out by incorporating slowed-down screams, lengthy guitar feedback and a spaced-out, almost tribal-sounding drum pattern. Another one of TFD’s strengths is their imagination, with head-spinning lyrics straight of a dystopian fantasy (“unlearning the unknown / crypto techno battle plans / war for the future / fought in never-never land.”) There’s also some intriguing commentary on their scene in general (“grind for the money / grind for the girls / grind for a voice / to shout against a silent world.”)

Various Artists IOTDXI 3LP+2CD

(R&S Records)
All right so here is another compilation of forward thinking electronic music from a label of such thought. Similar to the Hessle Audio compilation of last year in it’s bulk and and also in its quality. In fact, it includes one or three of the same artists. I appreciate that it includes exclusive tracks from all of the artists. The artists are Pariah, Space Dimension Controller, Airhead, Untold, Bullion, Blawan, The Chain, Klaus and Lone (one of the Pariah tracks is a Oneohtrix Point Never remix too, btw). Solid lineup contained in this one. This fits well as a soundtrack for filing while dancing or sitting and typing while dancing (never stop dancing or at least bobbing your head).
