Lemonade Diver

(True Panther Sounds)
Formed in San Francisco eight years ago before relocating to Brooklyn, this electronic trio has crafted a sensual, chilled-out sound that includes elements of dance, pop, R&B and freestyle. The layers of ethereal vocals, scattered beats and cool-as-ice synth make their sophomore full-length sound like a synthesis of the late 80s, early 90s and today. Opening track “Infinite Style” starts out on a moody note with a siren and drum machine before giving way to the bright, luxurious-sounding synth. “Big Changes” uses a punching metallic synth hook and distant, resonant vocals to sound like an R&B/dance tune that’d be played alongside Crystal Waters and Madonna. It’s certainly a refreshing, summery-sounding experience overall.

Endless Boogie Long Island

(No Quarter)
This New York band sounds like they’re straight out of a 70s-era biker bar, reminding me of ZZ Top and AC/DC with their heavy blues rock (treading into psychedelic at some points) chugging along for lengthy stretches. They sound like they’ve got a lot more experience than their informal late-90s roots suggest. Thirteen-and-a-half-minute opener “The Savagist” sets the mood, with a nonstop midtempo beat setting the foundation for trippy guitar improvisation and lead singer Paul Major (a.k.a. Top Dollar’s) rough snarling. Much of the running time is devoted to instrumental improvisation, but his vocals sound awesome when they come on, especially prominent on the classic-sounding rocker “Taking Out The Trash” and wild jamming number “General Admission.” The totally tripped-out, fried guitar on “Occult Banker” makes it an easy highlight for me.
