Nunslaughter / Witchtrap
nunslaughter witchtrap
(Hells Headbangers)
Each band on this seven-inch blasts their way through two blistering tracks of pure metal in their own way. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Nunslaughter lives up to their “devil metal” tag, influenced by death and black metal including Venom, Bathory and Slaughter. Their grimy, smoke-blackened sound is unflinchingly intense, complete with harsh, quick-changing riffs and utterly guttural vocals. On the second side is Witchtrap: a Colombian outfit with a more Headbangers Ball-friendly sound (influenced by AC/DC, Metallica, Anvil, etc.) to complement their jolting speed-metal energy and cleaner fidelity (but not-so-clean lyrics: i.e. “Sex Commander.”) That and the shredding, soloing on “The Devil’s On The Loose” make it a fun side to close with.

Son Lux Lanterns
son lux lanterns
(Joyful Noise)
NYC-based producer and composer Ryan Lott draws from his wide-range background – film orchestration, hip-hop beat programming, post-rock collaboration – on his haunting album Lanterns. It sounds fittingly luminous as an experimental work comprised of layers of minimalist instrumentation: wordless choirs, ghostly wails, a variety of instruments and slow-drifting beats that somehow come together to form catchy melodies. My favorite songs are the energetic, soaring “Lost It To Trying” using a mix of lively instrumentation and the laid-back “Easy” perked up with a loud, simple sax hook.
