Dwell Vermin and Ashes
(Hells Headbangers)
Guitarist Allan Brejner Larsen and vocalist Jens Bendtsen Pedersen originally formed this Danish doom metal band in 2012 as a means of releasing personal demons. Now a six-piece, Dwell has released its debut full-length, compiling their demo and three new tracks for one massive, lumbering beast that lives up to the grimy, barren imagery that the title conjures up. In addition to the shrieked vocals backed by heavy trudging guitar, bass and drums indicative of the genre, what makes the experience stand out to me the most is Kenneth Holme’s use of droning synth and ambience. It provides a very haunting atmosphere on tracks such as the Lustmord-like “Pathless and Dormant” and the mystical “Become the Void.”

Balmorhea Balmorhea [Reissue]
Balmorhea Balmorhea
(Western Vinyl)
Here’s a minimalist/post-rock ensemble that formed as a duo in Austin, Texas in 2006. They self-released this debut full-length one year later: now re-mastered and reissued on CD and (for the first time) vinyl, its mostly instrumental piano-and-acoustic-guitar-driven beauty can reach a larger audience. It feels like a cinematic score for a story set across multiple nostalgic and rustic locations. One of my favorite tracks is “In The Rowans,” combining piano and typewriter sounds to convey both laid-back introspection and unexpectedly frantic (but excellently executed) speed.
