Lightning Bolt Fantasy Empire
Lightning Bolt Fantasy Empire

(Thrill Jockey)
It’s hard to believe that drummer/vocalist Brian Chippendale and bass guitarist Brian Gibson have been rocking out as Lightning Bolt for over twenty years now, releasing album after album of blown-out-speaker noise rock with concrete-thick bass, high-speed drumming and distant-sounding, echoed vocals. This is their first record to come out a label other than Load Records, with the result being an album that still delivers skull-pounding heaviness, but cleaner production and more accessible song structures as opposed to their more heavily-distorted past. It doesn’t stray too far from the good old classic Lightning Bolt sound, thankfully: in fact, I loved the use of more varied psychedelic passages on progressive songs such as “Over the River and Through the Woods” and “Snow White (& The 7 Dwarves Fans).”

Cherry Glazerr Haxel Princess

(Burger)
Here’s the first full-length record from a young Los Angeles band whose ethereal, drifting rock incorporates dream pop, alternative, punk and surf. The simple-yet-compelling songs are odes to thoughts floating through teenage minds, from social conflicts to puppy love to enjoying casual food (it’s summed up well by a phrase repeated throughout “Bloody Bandaid”: “I feel weird.”) One of my other favorite tracks is the buzzing and fast-paced “White’s Not My Color This Evening,” with singer Clementine Creevy providing a jolt of sneering disgust at a party gone wrong.
