Rhyton Redshift
rhyton-redshift(Thrill Jockey)
This Brooklyn trio has a sound can be described as experimental and improvisational psychedelic/blues/folk rock, incorporating scales found in ancient Middle Eastern and Greek music (as is clearly evident in the complexly-layered opener “The Nine”.) Since Rhyton’s members have been in bands like No-Neck Blues Band, Stygian Stride and Pigeons, it’s no wonder they have a skill for creating challenging (but groovy) improvisation on this album. The nearly nine-minute title track (named for “an astronomical term for the displacement of spectral lines toward longer wavelengths often used to measure the otherwise immeasurable”) starts off – surprisingly enough – as cozy, accessible country rock complete with deep vocals before eventually morphing into a series of weird alien noises.

Eno • Hyde ‎Someday World
eno hyde someday world(Warp)
On the second collaborative album, English electronic musicians Brian Eno and Karl Hyde (the vocalist/guitarist for Underworld) create synth-rock/pop with the help of multiple guest musicians providing backing vocals and a wide variety of electronic and organic instruments. These songs are spawned from “beginnings” of unfinished songs that Eno had on a hard drive, which he got inspired to flesh out and give life. “Daddy’s Car”, for example, rises high with uplifting brass and exotic-sounding percussion.
